Dichondra

Dichondra: Lush Look, Water Smart.

Dichondra has thrived in Las Vegas parks and playgrounds for over 50 years, showing resilience in Southern Nevada’s winters and summers. Unlike traditional grass, it stays green year-round, making it an ideal lawn replacement.

Customers generally find Dichondra to be the most aesthetically pleasing ground cover compared to Kurapia or Micro Clover, thanks to its rounded leaves and uniform appearance.

Dichondra is a low-water, environmentally friendly alternative that provides a lush, green lawn appearance. This warm-season perennial ground cover tolerates extreme heat and spreads effectively through underground rhizomes, making it perfect for Las Vegas landscapes.

Dichondra Support Guide

Dichondra Care and Maintenance

Keep Dichondra’s soil damp but not soggy—overwatering can lead to root rot, and underwatering can cause browning and wilting.

Since every spot gets a different mix of sun and shade, there’s no one-size-fits-all watering schedule. Just aim to keep the soil lightly moist.

Dichondra rarely has issues with pests or disease. If you notice grubs or flea beetles, a quick treatment with Mallet, Sevin, or similar insecticides will do the trick—just be sure to follow the label instructions. For a tidy look, you can mow it with a regular mower.

Dichondra also handles less-than-perfect soil, growing well where traditional grass might struggle, and it doesn’t need much fertilizer or maintenance.

Disease

Dichondra is highly resilient but can occasionally be affected by diseases, mainly due to overwatering or specific environmental conditions.

The primary disease risk is root rot, caused by soil fungi like Pythium and Phytophthora, which thrive in waterlogged conditions, blocking roots from absorbing oxygen.

Signs include wilting, browning leaves, and stunted growth despite damp soil.

Managing root rot requires improving soil drainage, adjusting irrigation, and potentially applying a suitable fungicide.

Planting Instructions

Prep and Irrigation Setup:

  • Start by killing and removing any existing grass.
  • Install a subsurface irrigation system, such as Netafim, with 6-inch spacing for best results. Position a plug near each emitter for even watering. If using 12-inch spacing, offset the emitters in a triangular pattern to ensure full coverage. Water until the overlapping pools from each emitter saturate the soil around all plugs.

Planting Tips:

  • If using flats, cut plants into 2-3 inch squares and plant them as you would the plugs, placing each near an emitter.

Dichondra Planting Guide

Watering and Fertilization:

  • Water daily to keep soil moist around the Dichondra plugs.
  • To boost root growth, consider applying a balanced fertilizer like 15-15-15 or 16-20-0. Apply a pre-emergent weed killer once planting is done to reduce weeds.

How to Plant Dichondra

Planting Overview

To plant Dichondra successfully, start by loosening the soil to support shallow roots and clearing it of weeds.

Subsurface irrigation is ideal—it delivers water directly to the roots and conserves moisture. Place each Dichondra plug about 12 inches apart, spacing closer for quicker coverage.

Be sure each plug sits by an irrigation emitter and keep the surrounding soil moderately loose to allow the plants to spread.

Regularly check moisture levels, adjusting irrigation as needed to support even, healthy growth across your Dichondra ground cover.

It generally takes about 2-4 months for the Dichondra plugs to fully knit together, creating a lush lawn.

Dichondra FAQ

Does Dichndra grow well in the Las Vegas heat?

Dichondra does great in the Las Vegas heat! While it’s best to plant it in the summer when the temperatures are warm, it can be planted any time of the year and will even grow during the winter months. This hardy ground cover can handle a wide range of temperatures, from 25 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, making it perfect for the intense Southern Nevada climate. So, if you’re looking for a lush green lawn that won’t skip a beat in the heat, Dichondra is a solid choice.

Why should I choose Dichondra over artificial turf?

Choosing Dichndra over artificial turf offers several advantages. Our Dichondra provides almost all the benefits of traditional grass but only takes HALF THE WATER.

It cools your yard, can reduce your AC bills in the summer, encourage rainfall, clean the air, promote healthier soils and environments, encourage more outdoor play, and increase home property values.

Dichondra is also much less expensive than artificial turf.

Artificial turf is a good option only for purely aesthetic locations that receive zero human or pet traffic. ARTIFICIAL TURF IS PROVEN TO CAUSE CANCER, it reaches 170°+ in the Las Vegas summer, its average cost in Las Vegas is $10-12 per foot, it traps pet odors, still requires watering, and is extremely unfriendly to the environment.

The New York times wrote “due to the bad long-term value and the serious environmental problems, you’d be better off investing your money and effort into just about any other form of landscaping.”

Do you deliver Dichondra?

Yes, we deliver Dichondra right to your doorstep, or you can pick it up at our Las Vegas office.

You can order Dichondra in plugs or slabs.

Dichondra plugs come in trays with around 50 plugs per tray (16″x16″ trays), each plug measuring about 1 1/4″ wide and 3″ deep.

How Does Pet Urine Affect Dichondra?

Dichondra can handle dog urine better than traditional grass, making it a solid choice for pet owners. However, it’s not immune to pet urine, like our Micro Clover ground cover.

How well does Dichondra Handle Foot Traffic?

Dichondra handles light foot traffic well. Areas with high foot traffic will show some wear and tear. Dichondra can recover with enough time and proper care, so give it a little break, and it should bounce back nicely!

How often should I mow my Dichondra lawn?

Dichondra doesn’t require any mowing if left to grow naturally, reaching about 2-3 inches in height with small white flowers, if any.

For a more manicured appearance, you can mow it once every two months. If you prefer a flatter, matted look, mow it more frequently to help train the Dichondra to stay low and compact.

Does Dichondra quality for the SNWA smart water rebate program?

Yes, Dichondra does qualify for the SNWA smart water rebate program.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) Smart Water Rebate program offers up to $5 per foot for replacing traditional grass with drought-tolerant alternatives like Dichondra.

You must submit your rebate application before starting the project and follow the SNWA’s specific guidelines, so be sure to check the website for the latest eligibility criteria.
