Micro Clover Care and Maintenance
Micro Clover should be watered on a regular basis to stay moist but not overwatered. Underwatering or overwatering are the most common causes of any Micro Clover stress.
Underwatering will cause the plants to wilt and brown off.
Overwatering can cause the plants to suffer from root rot.
Because no location has the same sun exposure, irrigation layout, shade, etc., it is very difficult to give exact irrigation time instructions. Your goal is to keep the plants damp, but not soggy. Micro Clover is relatively pest and disease-free. If you notice damage from grubs or flea beetles, the Micro Clover can be sprayed with a product called Mallet, or its comparable chemicals. Follow the directions on the label.
Micro Clover requires minimal mowing, typically around 6-10 times per year. For a more polished look, it can be trimmed with a standard rotary mower.
Micro Clover produces its own nitrogen, which means, in addition to being immune to pet urine, it typically requires less fertilizer and maintenance to thrive. Do NOT use any broadleaf weed killers on this product.
Disease
Microclover is generally resistant to disease, but it can be susceptible to southern blight in hot, moist climates with high humidity and warm night temperatures.
Consequently, during the Vegas monsoon season (late June to mid-September) you’ll want to mow it more regularly to allow wind to reduce the humidity of the area.
You should also monitor watering more closely to ensure it has enough water to stay healthy but isn’t wet enough to invite southern blight. If you do manage to get blight in your Microclover (or if you just want to ensure prevention), you can treat your lawn with fungicides that target blight. Follow the instructions on the packaging for application times, quantities, methods, etc.
Pick up mower clippings. Material left on the clover can cause suffocation and lead to brown areas where the clover has to recover
Planting Instructions
- Spray and remove the existing grass with a grass killer.
- Install a subsurface irrigation system (e.g., Netafim) with 6″ spacing between plants or use 12″ spacing with a triangular pattern.
- Water long enough to ensure that pools from each emitter overlap, providing adequate moisture to all plugs.
- If using Micro-Clover in flats, cut into 2″-3″ squares and plant similarly to plugs.
- Water daily to keep the soil moist and consider adding 15-15-15 or 16-20-0 fertilizer for root growth.
- Apply pre-emergent weed killer after planting to prevent weed growth.
- We’re here to assist you and your landscaper throughout the process!
How to Plant Micro Clover
Planting Micro Clover Plugs
To plant Micro Clover successfully, begin by loosening the soil and clearing it of any weeds, ensuring it is ready for shallow root growth.
Install a subsurface irrigation system (6″-12″ on center), which conserves water by delivering it directly to the roots. If planting from plugs, space each plant 6″-12″ apart. The closer together you plant, the faster the plugs will fill in.
Be sure each plug is positioned next to the emitter.
Water regularly, maintaining consistent moisture, and adjust as needed for even growth.
Micro Clover generally takes 2–4 months to fully knit together, and it only requires mowing 6–10 times a year.
Planting Micro Clover in Sod Form
Micro Clover can also be laid as sod for an instant lawn.
Use subsurface irrigation alongside overhead watering for the first 2-3 weeks. During this time, water daily through the subsurface system and supplement with overhead watering 1-2 times per day, adjusting based on seasonal needs.
In the third week, reduce overhead watering to once daily for 3-4 days.
After this initial period, subsurface irrigation alone will maintain the lawn, providing efficient and sustainable hydration for your Micro Clover sod.
