Ground Cover FAQ
When's the best time of year to install a ground cover?
Kurapia, Dichondra, and Micro Clover love the heat, so the best time to plant is early April to early September. It won’t spread well in cold months. If you need to plant in late September through late March, we recommend our Micro Clover alternative lawn. It continues to grow well all through the winter.
Why should I choose a natural ground cover / alternative lawn over artificial turf?
Choosing a natural groundcover like Dichondra, Kurapia, or Micro-clover over artificial turf offers several advantages. Our Alternative Lawns provide almost all the benefits of traditional grass but only take HALF THE WATER. They cool your yard, can reduce your AC bills in the summer, encourage rainfall, clean the air, promote healthier soils and environments, encourage more outdoor play, and increase home property values.
Artificial turf is a good option only for purely aesthetic locations that receive zero human or pet traffic. ARTIFICIAL TURF IS PROVEN TO CAUSE CANCER, it reaches 170°+ in the Las Vegas summer, its average cost in Las Vegas is $10-12 per foot, it traps pet odors, still requires watering, and is extremely unfriendly to the environment. The New York times wrote “due to the bad long-term value and the serious environmental problems, you’d be better off investing your money and effort into just about any other form of landscaping.”
How does my ground cover come delivered?
When ordering ground cover like Dichondra, or Micro Clover, you can choose between plugs or slabs. Right now, you can only order Kurpaia in plugs. If you order ground cover plugs, they come in trays with around 72 plugs per tray, each plug measuring about 1 1/4″ wide and 3″ deep. If you prefer slabs, they will be delivered on a pallet, with each slab measuring about 16″x45″.
Where can I see examples of Kurapia installed in Las Vegas?
The University of Nevada, Reno Extension – Clark County Botanic Gardens has a Kurapia display.
The Springs Preserve has a display as well, but it was only recently put in, so the plugs are still filling in.
Feel free to give us a call and we’ll be happy to provide some more locations.
How can you get the SNWA smart water rebate and stay compliant while removing lawn sprinklers?
Use subsurface irrigation and plant Kurpaia or Dichondra from plugs. Over 3-4 months, the plugs will spread and knit together, forming a lush, beautiful lawn.
What are some alternative grass options for my house in Las Vegas?
Our alternative lawn products are the best way to reduce water usage and to keep your yard green, cool, and comfortable. We offer Dichondra, Kurapia, and Micro Clover lawns. They provide all the benefits of traditional grass but use 30-70% less water (depending on which product you choose). While each crop has its own major benefits, they all thrive in the region’s climate and require far less maintenance and much less water than traditional grass. Additionally, Kurapia always qualifies for the SNWA Water Smart Landscapes Rebate, up to $5 per sq. ft. Dichondra and Micro Clover will also usually qualify but need an SNWA representative’s approval prior to making the conversion.
How do I apply for the SNWA Smart Water Landscape Rebate?
To apply for the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) Smart Water Landscape Rebate, start by having SNWA assess your property to identify qualifying areas. This step is crucial; don’t begin any conversions until they’ve marked what qualifies, or you risk losing your rebate eligibility.
Once you have their approval, ensure your project meets the rebate guidelines, such as replacing grass with water-efficient plants. Next, fill out the online application on the SNWA website, providing details about your project. Be sure to include necessary documentation, like before-and-after photos and purchase receipts. Finally, submit your application and documentation for review, and once approved, you’ll receive your rebate check in the mail.
