Do you supply any grass alternatives that qualify for the SNWA Water Smart Landscape Rebate?
Yes, our Alternative Lawns, including Dichondra and Kurapia, fully qualify for the SNWA Water Smart Landscape Rebate, and Micro-Clover is currently in the approval process.
These drought-tolerant, low-maintenance ground covers are versatile alternatives to traditional lawns, ground covers, and erosion control plants. They can be mowed into a soft, low turf or left to naturally bloom into lush ground cover. Designed to thrive with minimal water, they are well-suited for light to moderate foot traffic, offering aesthetic appeal, cooling benefits, and improved soil and air quality. Best of all, they help reduce your water bill.
Dichondra stands out for its shade tolerance and is a popular aesthetic choice, while Kurapia is known for its exceptional drought tolerance and rapid growth. Micro Clover is particularly pet-friendly, as it’s resistant to pet urine. Each of these grass alternatives will significantly lower your water consumption while maintaining a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape.
Can I pick up sod or ground covers directly from your location in Las Vegas?
Not at this time, but we can deliver it wherever you need it 6 days a week.
What types of sod do you offer in Las Vegas?
We carry both cool-season and warm-season grasses. Fescue (Trophy Plus Blend) is the most common choice for residential applications. We also offer several Bermuda varieties that are staples for commercial applications but also work great for home and yards: TIFTUF (patented Bermudagrass, known for being the newest and most drought-tolerant grass), Tifway 419, Tifway II, and Tifgreen 328.
Should I choose sod or ground cover for my yard?
When deciding between sod and ground covers, it's important to understand how each grows and the kind of care they require. Sod, such as TifTuf or Tifway 419, grows vertically, creating a traditional, soft, lush lawn that’s perfect for play and lounging. Grass like this requires regular mowing to maintain its height and aesthetic, but it creates a beautiful, comfortable space that many homeowners prefer for its natural softness underfoot.
Ground covers, like Kurapia, Dichondra, and Micro Clover, grow laterally, spreading out across the ground rather than growing tall. This growth pattern means they don’t need to be mowed as frequently—up to six times less—making them a great low-maintenance option. They also use 30-40% less water than traditional grass, making them more water-efficient in the desert climate. While these ground covers won’t provide the same cushiony feel as sod, they can still create a dense, attractive ground cover that works well for people seeking a more sustainable landscape with less upkeep.
Choosing between sod and ground covers ultimately depends on your needs. If you want a soft, traditional lawn that’s great for foot traffic, sod is the way to go. But if you’re looking for something more water-efficient, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly, ground covers like Kurapia and Dichondra might be the better fit. Each option has its unique benefits depending on what you want out of your outdoor space.
Can I plant sod over existing turf, or do I need to remove the old grass first?
we recommend removing any old or existing grass before laying new sod. This step ensures the best root-to-soil contact for healthy growth. If you leave the old turf in place, the new sod’s roots may struggle to establish, which could cause it to dry out or not root properly. After clearing the area, we suggest leveling the soil and adding topsoil if needed to provide an ideal foundation. If you're dealing with Bermuda grass, it’s important to fully remove it to prevent regrowth under your new sod. For more details on how to properly prepare your yard, check out our guide on sod installation.
How do I know if my lawn is getting enough water?
We recommend keeping an eye out for a few key signs to determine if your lawn is getting enough water. If your grass is turning dry, fading, or showing foot impressions that don’t bounce back, it may be time to water. Healthy, hydrated grass should bounce back after walking on it.
We suggest watering deeply and less frequently to encourage strong, deep roots. Aim for about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week—this can include both rainfall and irrigation. During the hotter months in the Las Vegas area, you may need to increase watering, but be cautious not to overwater, as that can lead to fungal issues and wasted resources.
For the most accurate advice on irrigation, we recommend consulting local watering guides, like those provided by the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA), to ensure your lawn gets the right amount of water for optimal health.
